The history and heritage of fine bone china

Before we explore the artistry behind fine bone china, let's delve into its rich history and heritage. The origins of bone china can be traced back to Britain, where it first emerged as a result of the pioneering efforts of English ceramics manufacturers in the 18th century.

The origins of bone china in Britain

It all began in the Staffordshire region of England, with the discovery of a secret formula that blended bone ash with china clay to create a porcelain of unparalleled quality. This revolutionary technique gave birth to bone china, a material renowned for its delicacy and translucency. It quickly became a symbol of British craftsmanship and refinement.

The Staffordshire region, known as the heartland of the ceramics industry, played a pivotal role in the development of bone china. The abundance of local resources, including high-quality clay and access to coal for firing kilns, made it an ideal location for pottery production. Skilled potters and craftsmen flocked to the area, bringing with them their expertise and contributing to the growth of the industry.

As the demand for bone china grew, manufacturers in Staffordshire faced the challenge of meeting the needs of an expanding market. They embraced technological advancements, such as the introduction of steam-powered machinery, to increase production capacity without compromising on quality. This combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation propelled the bone china industry to new heights.

The evolution of bone china craftsmanship

Over the centuries, bone china production techniques have evolved, refined, and perfected. Skilled artisans meticulously handcraft each piece, paying meticulous attention to detail. From the initial moulding to the firing and glazing, every step in the process is carefully executed to ensure the highest standards of quality.

One of the defining characteristics of bone china is its delicate and translucent appearance. Achieving this requires a precise balance of ingredients and meticulous control over the firing process. The bone ash, derived from animal bones, adds strength and whiteness to the porcelain, while the china clay provides plasticity and workability. The combination of these elements, along with the expertise of the craftsmen, results in the exquisite beauty of bone china.

Throughout history, bone china has been favored by royalty and nobility, who appreciated its elegance and refinement. It adorned the tables of grand palaces and stately homes, becoming a symbol of prestige and luxury. Today, bone china continues to be cherished for its timeless beauty and enduring quality.

Nearly 6 years ago we downsized and disposed of all our old china. We purchased Buttercup china - 12 of everything, and that is all we have used everyday since that time; for dinner parties, family get-togethers and just the 2 of us. In all those months, there has not been a chip or a crack in anything. Today, I carelessly dropped a bowl on the kitchen tiles and not surprisingly it smashed. That is the only damage we have had. As I am so amazed and pleased with the quality of Buttercup china I have immediately ordered a replacement. In fact I ordered 3 new bowls, as we use bowls a lot!
